Kevin Russell, aka Shinyribs, defies genres while creating a savory musical stew of Texas Blues, New Orleans R&B funk, Memphis Soul, and roots-rock. The Austin TX based Russell plays acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, ukelele and mixes his exceptional songs with some expertly selected cover songs to weave a spell of musical entertainment second to none.
I first started following Kevin when he was in the band The Gourds. The Gourds were active from 1994 to 2013, touring and recording fulltime before deciding to take a hiatus. Meanwhile, in 2007, Kevin started a solo side project using the name Shinyribs. He released the first Shinyribs recording in 2010 and after the Gourds shut down, he was soon building a new band. In recent years he has been touring as Shinyribs the band, which has grown to 9 -12 pieces including horns, steel guitar, organ and backup singers, playing festivals, cruises, clubs and theaters across the nation. Shinyribs was named Best Austin Band at the Austin Chronicle’s Austin Music Awards (2017, 2018), awarded Album of the Year for I Got Your Medicine (2017), and Best 2020-Themed Song for "Stay Home".

I fell hard for Kevin’s songs while he was in The Gourds and continue to admire his music as Shinyribs. While he excels as frontman for his big band, Kevin is just as comfortable as a solo performer and welcomes getting to do more intimate shows. He has been so open to allowing supporters to get to know him that I now count him a friend. He’s mad-talented, a dedicated family man, a natural entertainer whose humor and kindness always comes through. He will share music from his heart and you will leave a fan. I have dreamed of this house concert for many years and it’s finally coming true! Please don’t miss this one if at all possible.
Long time friend of Hillbilly Haiku and fan of Kevin’s, Linda McRae will kick-off our evening of exceptional music and fun on the best note possible. She has invited Daryl Wayne Dasher to add his guitar and harmony skills and it’s always the best of times when these two collaborate!
