What is a House Concert?
If you have never been introduced to the concept of live music in someone’s home, this is a very valid question. I know I had to experience one for myself before I understood. I just couldn’t conceive of professional musicians wanting to play in someone’s home, we always went out in public for that privilege. Turns out, there are many amazingly talented artists who would prefer to play for a smaller audience who is actually attentive and listening, than to be background music in a public social setting. And often, they make better compensation when allowing true fans to give from the heart than asking folks to pay a cover charge at the door or attempting to get a venue to pay them. So, following the lead of friends who were hosting house concerts in Texas, we started Hillbilly Haiku House Concerts in our home between Mt. Juliet and Lebanon, TN.
What is Hillbilly Haiku?
My lifetime of being a music nerd to draw on, I reach out to artists I am loving to listen to and ask them if they do house concerts. I only book artists I already follow and would welcome into our home. My tastes, and therefore what you will hear at Hillbilly Haiku, will not fit neatly under any one genre. It is a mixture including Folk, Country, Bluegrass, and Roots, and honoring songwriters has been our goal since the beginning. We began in 2007, we took a 5 year break during the pandemic and are recently starting again on version 2.0. Subscribing to this substack will get you an email notification of our house concert announcements and news whenever I post here. You can also check our facebook page under Hillbilly Haiku House Concerts but we hope you will subscribe so you won’t miss out on any of our fun. To attend, you email me at hillbillyhaiku@gmail.com so we have an accurate count to prepare for and so that I can give you our address. If we publish our address publicly, we are no longer a private party and open ourselves to a whole nuther set of rules we wish to avoid. You come on the night of the concert, with a dish to share for our potluck (optional) and prepared to give a free will donation to the artist(s) who is providing our evening of music. Generosity rocks, our mission is to give back to the musicians who enrich our lives so.
